Gucci Shopping Bag Colours Changed 5 Times Since 2010, 3 With a New Creative Director

Every Gucci Shopping Bag Colour From 2010 to 2026, What Each Era Changed, and the 3 Changes That Arrived With a New Creative Director

The Gucci shopping bag has changed colour 5 times in 16 years: brown in 2010, black and white in 2015, green in 2020, Rosso Ancora red in 2023 and matte black in 2026. That averages a little over 4 years per colour, and 3 of the 5 changes fall in a year when the house changed creative director.

5 Colours in 16 Years, and the 3 That Arrived With a New Creative Director

Lined up by year against whoever was running the house, the changes do not look evenly spread:

Year Bag colour Creative director that year New appointment that year
2010 Brown Frida Giannini No
2015 Black and white Alessandro Michele, confirmed 21 January 2015 Yes
2020 Green Alessandro Michele No
2023 Rosso Ancora Sabato De Sarno, announced 28 January 2023 Yes
2026 Matte black Demna, announced March 2025 Yes

The colour for each year comes from what the Luxe Addict team gathered and published on the page. Appointment dates come from news reports and public records

When Did the Cycle Shorten From 5 Years to 3?

The first 2 gaps are both 5 years, 2010 to 2015 and 2015 to 2020. The last 2 are both 3 years, 2020 to 2023 and 2023 to 2026.

The shortening starts after 2020, the same stretch in which the house began changing creative directors more often, from Michele at 7 years to De Sarno at 2.

Calculated by the Luxe Addict team from the years shown in the timeline

2010 Brown and 2015 Black and White, the 2 Eras Before Materials Entered the Story

The first 2 eras work through colour and logo alone, with nothing said about materials or how the bag was made:

  • 2010 brown
The brown tone the house had used for decades, a gold Gucci logo, and handles raised in relief off the surface of the bag

  • 2015 black and white
A black and white pairing with a black Gucci logo on white, reading cleaner and more minimal than the era before it

Details for these 2 eras come from what the Luxe Addict team recorded. No brand announcement explaining the bag change in either year has been found.

What Else Happened to the House in 2015?

Alessandro Michele was confirmed as creative director on 21 January 2015, taking over from Frida Giannini, and his first show was the womens Fall/Winter 2015 collection in Milan on 25 February 2015.

The black and white bag therefore arrived with a change of direction across the whole house, not as a packaging update on its own.

2020 Green, the Era That Changed How the Bag Was Made

The green bag arrived with the Gucci Gift collection in November 2020, and it was the first time a colour change came with a full change of materials:

  • Uncoated paper
Dyed green at the start of production, which cuts ink use and keeps the whole bag recyclable

  • Black torchon handles
Made from 100% recycled polyester and knotted rather than glued

  • Dust bags and suit carriers
A mix of regenerated cotton and recycled polyester, with a black Gucci logo

  • Ribbons and hangers
Ribbons in 100% organic cotton, hangers in recycled polystyrene

How Is Dyeing at the Start Different From Printing Colour on Top?

Dyeing at the start means the colour goes into the pulp, so it runs through the whole sheet. Printing means a layer of colour is laid onto finished paper.

The difference is that dyed paper needs no coating, so it enters recycling without a coated layer to separate out first. Gucci says its packaging is already plastic-free, with a target of eliminating single-use plastics by 2030.

2023 Rosso Ancora, a Colour Taken From a London Hotel Lift

Rosso Ancora is the deep burgundy-tinged red Gucci adopted under Sabato De Sarno, who was announced as creative director on 28 January 2023 and showed his first collection at Milan Fashion Week that September.

The shade comes from the wall of a lift at the Savoy Hotel in London, where Guccio Gucci worked as a porter in the late 1800s before returning to Italy to start his own luggage house.

Why Take a Colour From Where the Founder Carried Other Peoples Bags?

Because the Savoy is where the story starts. Guccio Gucci saw the luggage of wealthy hotel guests every day, then took what he had seen back to Florence and built a house around it.

De Sarno ran the shade through whole collections, up to the Cruise 2025 show at Tate Modern in London on 13 May 2024 with head-to-toe red looks, and the first lipstick he designed for Gucci Beauty uses the same tone.

The Luxe Addict Take on 2026 Matte Black and the Demna Era

Demna was announced as the new creative director in March 2025, following Sabato De Sarno, after 10 years running Balenciaga from 2015 to 2025, and his first Gucci campaign, La Famiglia, arrived in early 2026.

The bag for this era is matte black with a silver logo that reads clearly against it, as the Luxe Addict team recorded. Against the previous 4 eras, it is the first bag whose colour is not drawn from a house colour: brown, green and red all appeared on Gucci products first.

Which Era Is Already in Your Cupboard?

The hardest to find is the 2015 black and white, because it had the shortest run before the green bag replaced it in 2020, and because people were not keeping shopping bags as carefully then as they are now.

The 2020 green has the most material detail to look at, with knotted handles and uncoated paper that feels different from every other era the moment you pick it up.

Which Era Is Worth Keeping?

Luxury paper bags have no clear resale market the way the products do, but each one dates a period of the house to a specific pair of hands. Keeping all 5 is holding 16 years of Gucci in one stack.
