RIMOWA Essential Adds Umber and Ultramarine, Two Pigments Painters Used Long Before Luggage

Umber and Ultramarine, the 2 New Colours on the RIMOWA Essential Polycarbonate Line, and Which Sizes Actually Carry Them

RIMOWA Essential has added 2 colours, Umber in deep brown and Ultramarine in vivid blue. Prices start at THB 33,300 for the Cabin size and reach THB 52,800 for the Trunk Plus. Both sit on the same polycarbonate shell used across the RIMOWA Essential line, but they do not run through every size. The Thai site lists 6 combinations across 4 sizes.

Which Sizes Carry the 2 New Colours, and Where Prices Start

RIMOWA prices both colours identically in every size, so the only variable is capacity:

Size Colours available Price Capacity
Essential Cabin Umber and Ultramarine THB 33,300 36 L
Essential Check-In M Ultramarine only THB 38,400 60 L
Essential Check-In L Umber only THB 41,700 85 L
Essential Trunk Plus Umber and Ultramarine THB 52,800 101 L

If You Want the Check-In M in Brown, That Combination Does Not Exist

4 sizes times 2 colours should give 8 options, yet RIMOWA’s Umber & Ultramarine collection page lists only 6. The Check-In M is made in Ultramarine alone and the Check-In L in Umber alone, while the Cabin and the Trunk Plus carry both. Anyone already set on a mid-size case has the colour decided for them before they reach the store.

Umber and Ultramarine Were Painters’ Pigments Long Before They Were Luggage

Neither name was invented for this release. Both are real pigment names. The CAMEO database at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston describes umber as a natural brown earth containing iron hydroxide and manganese dioxide, named after deposits found near Umbria in Italy. Roasting the raw earth converts those iron hydroxides into iron oxides, turning the pigment darker and redder, which is where burnt umber gets its name.

Ultramarine comes from lapis lazuli. The Winsor & Newton archive records that grinding the stone into pigment was slow work and that a great deal of effort produced only a small amount. The pigment became a marker of status, patrons sometimes set aside a separate budget for it, and all of this together once made it more expensive than gold.

So What Does RIMOWA Itself Say About Where the Colours Came From?

Nothing about pigments or art history. On its own Essential collection page, RIMOWA describes the new colours only as inspired by nature. The pigment story explains where the words come from, not what the brand says it was thinking, and the two are worth keeping apart.

A Polycarbonate Shell, and 2.2 kg Between the Smallest and Largest Size

The whole Essential line uses a polycarbonate shell rather than the aluminium of the Original line. These are the figures RIMOWA publishes per size:

Size Dimensions (cm) Weight Capacity
Essential Cabin 55 x 39 x 23 3.2 kg 36 L
Essential Check-In M 67 x 43 x 24 4.1 kg 60 L
Essential Check-In L 77 x 50 x 26.5 4.8 kg 85 L
Essential Trunk Plus 80 x 41 x 37 5.4 kg 101 L

Dimensions include wheels and handles, as stated on RIMOWA product pages

The Size That Holds the Most Is Not the Size That Buys the Most Room

Divide each price by the capacity RIMOWA publishes and the largest case stops looking like the best value per litre:

Size Price Capacity Cost per litre
Essential Cabin THB 33,300 36 L THB 925
Essential Check-In M THB 38,400 60 L THB 640
Essential Check-In L THB 41,700 85 L THB 491
Essential Trunk Plus THB 52,800 101 L THB 523

Calculated by the Luxe Addict team from RIMOWA’s published prices and capacities, rounded to whole baht, excluding shipping and promotions

And if You Are Only Buying One, Which Size Should It Be?

The Check-In L buys the most room at THB 491 per litre, THB 32 per litre cheaper than the Trunk Plus even though the shelf prices sit THB 11,100 apart. This is exactly where colour and size collide, because the Check-In L is made in Umber only. Anyone set on Ultramarine has to move up to the Check-In M or the Trunk Plus instead.

Brown or Blue, and How to Pick One You Will Not Tire of by the Second Trip

Both are deep colours rather than neutrals, yet they pull in different directions. Umber is a greyed brown that sits close to earth tones and tan leather goods. Ultramarine is a vivid blue with far fewer lookalikes on an airport belt. If the case has to last several years, the better question is what already lives in the wardrobe, not which colour appeals today.

And if the Shell Cracks or a Wheel Fails, How Far Does the Guarantee Go?

RIMOWA states on its Essential product pages that the line carries a lifetime guarantee covering repairs to all functional damage. The terms are the same for every colour and every size, so a darker shell does not change what is covered.

Which Colour to Reserve First Before the Year-End Trips

In short: Umber and Ultramarine cost the same in every size, starting at THB 33,300, only 6 combinations actually exist, and the Check-In L, which buys the most room per litre, comes in brown alone. Anyone not in a hurry can look back at the previous pair, Orange and Magenta for comparison, or read how to match a RIMOWA colour to your birthday before walking into the store.
