Thailand Passport Ranking 2026: Where the Thai Passport Sits Among the World's Most Powerful
Thailand’s Passport Ranking in the 2026 Henley Index, Five Years of Champions, and How the Count Actually Works
Thailand’s passport sits 63rd in the July 2026 edition of the Henley Passport Index, with 77 destinations reachable without applying for a visa in advance. Singapore holds first place with 192, a position it has kept since the January 2025 edition. The index compares 199 passports against 227 travel destinations and is updated monthly.

Henley’s 227 Destinations Are Not 227 Countries
The word Henley uses is destinations, not countries, and the difference is not semantic. Of the 227 destinations, 28 are not sovereign states: most are overseas territories or special administrative regions that issue no passport of their own but set entry terms separate from the parent country. On the passport side, the index counts Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan separately from China, and includes the Vatican and Palestine. Thailand’s 77 therefore means 77 of the 227 destinations the index tracks, not 77 of the world’s countries.
What Does Without a Prior Visa Actually Cover?
Four things: no visa at all, visa on arrival, a visitor’s permit, and an ETA, which Henley treats as not a visa because it is issued automatically within minutes or hours and requires no supporting documents. What is excluded is the e-Visa, because it must be submitted and approved before departure, involves real assessment, takes days or weeks and can be refused. This is the single most common misreading when the figure is set against a visa-free list from another site.
Five Years of Champions, With First Place Reaching Fewer Places
Tracked across five years, the destination count attached to first place climbed to 2025 and then fell back:
| Year | Edition | First place | Destinations |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | January | Japan and Singapore | 192 |
| 2023 | January | Japan | 193 |
| 2024 | January | France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, Spain | 194 |
| 2025 | January | Singapore | 195 |
| 2026 | July | Singapore | 192 |
Henley updates the index monthly and publishes major reports two to three times a year. The table uses the edition named in each row.
Why Did First Place Fall From 195 to 192?
Not because Singapore’s passport weakened. Visa policy tightened worldwide and Henley reclassified how ETAs and e-Visas are treated, so every country’s figure moved down together. That is the same reason Thailand’s rank improved while its destination count fell.
Thailand Is Fifth in ASEAN, More Than 80 Destinations Behind Brunei
Within ASEAN alone the gap between Singapore and Myanmar runs to 149 destinations, and Thailand sits in the middle of the table:
| Country | Rank | Destinations |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore | 1 | 192 |
| Malaysia | 7 | 183 |
| Brunei | — | 163 |
| Thailand | 63 | 77 |
| Indonesia | 68 | 70 |
| Philippines | 72 | 65 |
| Vietnam | 87 | 48 |
| Cambodia | 88 | 47 |
| Laos | 89 | 47 |
| Myanmar | 91 | 43 |
July 2026 edition.
Has Thailand Risen or Fallen Over Five Years?
By rank it has risen; by destination count it has fallen. Thailand was 66th with 79 destinations in September 2023, climbed steadily to 60th with 79 in the January 2026 edition, and now sits 63rd with 77 in July. The peak destination count was 82, reached across 2024 and 2025.

The United States and Britain Once Led, and Here Is Where They Sit Now
The United States last held first place in 2014 and Britain last held it in 2015. In the July 2026 edition Britain is sixth with 184 destinations and the United States is tenth with 180, having dropped out of the top ten entirely to twelfth in the October 2025 edition, the first time that had happened in the index’s 20-year history. The biggest riser over those two decades is the United Arab Emirates, up 153 destinations from 62nd in 2006 to joint second in 2026, while the only passport in the world with a net loss over the period is Bolivia, down 6.
What the Thai Passport Is Worth in Practice
The top ten of this year’s index holds 38 passports, because countries on the same score share a rank, so the rank number describes a group more than a precise position. For anyone planning a trip, the more usable number is the 77 destinations, and the thing to remember is that those include visa on arrival and ETA rather than being visa-free throughout. Destinations requiring an e-Visa before departure are not in that figure, so each destination still has to be checked on its own terms.
