Cartier Tank Must and CHANEL Première Share a Quartz Movement but Not an Origin Story

Cartier Tank Must and CHANEL Première Édition Originale, 2 Rectangular Quartz Watches Whose Shapes Came From a Tank and a Perfume Stopper

The Cartier Tank Must and the CHANEL Première Édition Originale are rectangular women’s watches running the same quartz movement and the same 30 m water resistance. What separates them is case size, material and strap. What separates them most is where the shape came from: one from a wartime tank, the other from a perfume bottle stopper.

The Small Stone on the Crown Is a Different Stone on Each Watch

What the post’s image cannot show is the crown stone. Cartier states that the Tank Must carries a synthetic spinel cut as a cabochon; CHANEL states that the Première carries an onyx cabochon. Different stones, different colours, sitting in the same place and doing the same job: the single point of colour on a watch that is otherwise metal and dial.

The Tank Began as a Tank, and Cartier Says So Itself

Cartier’s Tank page states the watch was created in 1917, inspired by a military tank seen from above, and sets out the geometry plainly: the 2 vertical bars, the brancards, stand for the tracks, and the case between them for the vehicle’s cabin.

What follows from that principle is what makes the Tank look unlike other rectangular watches. Cartier says the case lines carry on into the bracelet, so the rhythm of the lines is not broken at the lugs, the point where most watches stop. Anyone who has wondered why a Tank reads as cleaner than other rectangles has the answer there.

And How Does the Tank Must Differ From the Other Tanks?

Must is a name Cartier has used since the 1970s, and the Tank Must takes the shape of the Tank Louis Cartier into more accessible materials. The current Tank collection runs this line in 3 sizes, and the watch in the post is the large model at 33.7 x 25.5 mm.

The Première Began With a Perfume Stopper, and a Square in Paris

CHANEL states that the Première launched in 1987 as the first watch the house made for women, and that its octagonal case evokes the stopper of the N°5 bottle. CHANEL’s own 1980s history page adds that the dial takes its shape from both the N°5 stopper and the Place Vendôme, the square where the boutique stands.

The chain-and-leather strap is a second borrowing from something the house already had. CHANEL describes the original bracelet, interlaced with leather, as being like the chain of the quilted bag, reinterpreted on a watch. The piece is made at the CHANEL Watch Manufacture in Switzerland.

They Look Close in the Photograph, but the Dials Are 65% Apart

Multiply out the case dimensions each house publishes and the gap is wider than the post’s image suggests:

Watch Case size Approx. dial area
Tank Must de Cartier 33.7 x 25.5 mm 859 sq mm
CHANEL Première Édition Originale 26.1 x 20 mm 522 sq mm
Difference — 337 sq mm, or 65% larger

Calculated by the Luxe Addict team from the case dimensions each house publishes, treated as rectangles for comparison only, not as visible dial area

Both Run Quartz, Not Automatic. Does a Mechanical Version Exist?

For both, yes, but not in these 2 references. Cartier makes the Tank Must in quartz and in an automatic driven by its own 1847 MC calibre. CHANEL made the Première Flying Tourbillon, hand-wound, in 2012, marking 25 years since its first watch. Anyone set on a mechanical movement has to look elsewhere in each line, not at the pair compared here.

Leather or Chain, and Which One You Can Change Yourself

Cartier states on the product page that the Tank Must’s calfskin strap is interchangeable, with a steel ardillon buckle, so the colour can be swapped without a trip to the boutique. The Première says nothing about swapping, because its strap is a metal chain with leather threaded through it. That is part of the design rather than a component meant to be exchanged.

If You Already Wear Jewellery, Which One Sits With It More Easily?

The published materials answer this. The Tank Must is steel throughout with a black leather strap, so it stays in a silver register that clashes with nothing in particular. The Première is steel coated in 18K yellow gold across case, hands and chain, so it meets gold jewellery immediately, while asking more firmly that everything else on the wrist follow the same tone.

Which One Sits Better on the Wrist You Already Dress

Movement and water resistance are identical here. What differs is where the shape came from: the Tank from a tank seen from above, the Première from a perfume stopper and a Paris square.
